Holly's Introduction

Hello,
I’m so excited to working on a blog. I would have never thought I would ever work on one and now I can see how having one for my school’s library would be helpful. Although I am still having a hard time figuring out how to do all this; I’m lucky to have my 11 year old helping me navigate it.

I work as a volunteer in my kid’s elementary school, and mostly I deal with the circulation and shelving aspect of the library. I’m not sure really what our librarian does for the electronics / tech aspect at the school, but I’m looking forward to learning what she does. I’m especially excited to learn all the fun, cool things in the class to me to know more about technology.

One thing that frustrates me is the fact that the librarian now has to also be the IT person at our school. A teacher today told me how happy that she is that the librarian can help her out with all her computers, and put the apps on the iPads that the kids use in class. I really wanted to give her a piece of my mind! How does she expect us to deal with all that, on top of running the “library” part of the library? It is way too much for one person to do. That is why I spend as much time in there helping as much as I can - plus I love every minute being with the kids.

Again, I’m looking forward to the class, and hopefully it will change my view on all of these “Library Media Tech” job requirements.

  1. Hi Holly!

While I think it is great that librarians are learning more about different ways they can use technology in the library, I also feel bad because it is simply more work for them. At the school I used to work for, the school librarian, who'd worked there most of her life, was let go and replaced with a library technician that was to take over the traditional duties of a librarian as well as the IT part for much lower pay.
